In an NFC
West matchup that looks a lot more appealing today than anyone thought it would
four weeks ago, the undefeated Arizona Cardinals travel to Missouri Thursday
night to take on the St. Louis Rams.
After the
Cardinals defeated New England two weeks ago, there was some thought they were
just a nice story that would eventually fade away. They had problems against
Miami in Week 4, but somehow, some way were able to run their winning streak to
four to start the season.
The Rams
played one of those bowling-shoe ugly games against Seattle last week en route
to evening their record at 2-2. They aren't playing great football in any phase
of the game, but are doing a lot more this year than they did last season.

While some
might be skeptical of Arizona's start, Brian Billick of Fox Sports is
definitely not one of them. After the Cardinals knocked off Miami in Week 4,
this is what the former Baltimore head coach wrote about them.
Although it
wasn’t on display on Sunday, the strength of this team is the defense led by
coordinator Ray Horton. He has built this defense in the mold of the Pittsburgh
Steelers, where he was a part of three Super Bowls and helped the defense to
rank in the top 10 for seven consecutive seasons, three of which were as the
league leader. Now, in just his second season with the Cardinals, he entered
this game with a defense that had given up just two touchdowns, the fewest in
the NFL.
The Cardinals strike me as an enigma right now.
They have the perfect record, which is all that really matters, but they don't
look good winning games.
It was so
easy to hate on Kolb last season, but at least he looks like a competent
quarterback right now. He is playing more efficient football than putting up
big numbers, and it seems to be working.
The
Cardinals don't have strong stats anywhere—24th in passing, 30th in rushing,
21st in pass defense, 15th in run defense—-so perhaps this fast start is a
fluke that will be exposed later on.
Either way,
Kolb is going to end up being the difference-maker for the Cardinals. He has
the most potential of any quarterback on the roster, is capable of doing good
things and is starting to show some improvements.
The matchup
that has the most potential in this game is Amendola against Patrick Peterson.
These are two young, budding stars who are off to strong starts this season.
For the
Rams, a team not exactly riddled with playmakers on offense, having a wide
receiver like Amendola who they can depend on for at least five to six
receptions per game is critical.
He's not a
burner, so don't expect Amendola to break a big one. But he does everything
else well. He can go over the middle, run precise routes and put himself in
position to make any catch.
I don't know
what to make of the Cardinals. Their record says they are very good, but they
aren't exactly making anything look easy. I suppose style points shouldn't
matter, though we all know that's garbage.
Because the
Cardinals have to travel halfway across the country on a short week, the Rams
have a huge advantage. I think they can take advantage of it.
